"Un giardiniere possiede diversi semi, li interra e senza timore di sbagliarsi può dire: là cresceranno insalate, là ravanelli ecc. Ed è ciò che si verifica, perché si tratta di un sapere fondato sullo studio e l’esperienza. Ebbene, nelle loro credenze, molte persone sono come giardinieri che si aspettano di raccogliere pur non avendo seminato nulla, o che seminano carote pensando di veder spuntare porri. Attendono cose irrealizzabili perché non hanno alcun sapere e neppure esperienza. 
Non ci si deve fare illusioni: si raccoglie solo ciò che si è seminato. Se si incontrano fallimenti invece dei successi che ci si aspettava, significa che non si è seminato nulla, o che non si è saputo seminare i semi buoni. Ciò si verifica in tutti i campi, anche in quello della vita spirituale. Perché credete che nei Vangeli Gesù abbia più volte utilizzato l’immagine del seminatore?"

"Gardeners have various types of seed, and when they sow them, they can say with utmost certainty that lettuces will grow here, radishes there, and so on. And this proves to be the case, because it is a matter of knowledge based on study and experience. And yet, in their beliefs, many people are like gardeners who expect to harvest something without having sown any seeds, or who sow carrot seeds expecting leeks to grow instead. They expect unrealistic things, because they have neither knowledge nor experience.
